Proper preparation is important in terms of dressing and equipment’s. Please bring the following items with you,

On the day of your gorilla trek

On the day of your gorilla trek, you’ll set off very early in the morning after your breakfast to track to the gorillas from the edge of the forest. Your driver/guide will pick you from your lodge and will drive you to the park headquarters. The guides here speak excellent English and are very good. They will be taking you to a specific group of ‘habituated’ mountain gorillas, which they know well and are used to human visitors. You’ll be divided into 8 people and after a briefing on safety and gorilla trekking etiquette; you’ll be driven to the start of the trail to reach your mountain gorilla group. Your guide will then lead you along generally clear paths up into the forest, in radio communication with the trackers that stay with the group so that they can be located. Occasionally one, often a playful youngster, will approach you with curiosity sometimes coming so close that you’ll have to move away. The various groups and their locations will obviously change from time to time: mountain gorillas often climb higher in the dry season and descend during the rains, they might move on due to pressure from wild gorillas and individuals will often join other groups. When tracking gorillas, it’s possible to request to visit a specific group once you are at the park headquarters, but this can never be guaranteed.

What to Know about Lake Kivu in Rwanda

Lake Kivu is one of the African Great Lakes lying on the boarder of Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo with in the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift. Lake Kivu empties into the Ruzizi River, which flows southwards into Lake Tanganyika.Lake Kivu is found in the Northern Province of Rwanda and can be visited on Honeymoon Adventures.

As well as boasting a number of delightful beach resorts, this beautiful lake is also a great place to cycle the Congo–Nile trail.

Running along the Congolese border for 90km, the 2,370km² Lake Kivu is one of a string of ‘inland seas’ that submerge much of the Albertine Rift floor as it runs southward from the Sudan to Zambia. It is very a beautiful lake, hemmed in by steeply terraced escarpments containing several peaks of 2,800m or higher, including the smoking outline of volcanic Nyiragongo in the far north, and it has long served as a popular weekend getaway for residents of this otherwise landlocked country.

Kivu has a smaller surface area than the two most expansive Albertine Rift lakes, the more southerly Tanganyika and more northerly Albert. Nevertheless, a maximum depth of 480m and total water content of 333km3 places it among the world’s 20 deepest and 20 most voluminous freshwater bodies. In addition, the 285km² Idjwi Island, which falls entirely within Congolese territory, is the second largest inland island in Africa and tenth largest in the world.

A shallower and larger incarnation of Kivu probably formed about two million years ago as a result of the same tectonic activity that created the Albertine Rift and other associated lakes. Back then, Kivu would have been contiguous with the lower-lying Lake Edward on the Uganda.  About 20,000 years ago, however, a natural dam created by lava from the Virungas isolated Lake Kivu from Lake Edward. As a result, Kivu’s surface rose to its present-day altitude of 1,470m, the Rusizi River which had formerly drained out of Lake Tanganyika into the southern tip of Kivu reversed its flow, and the lake became part of the Congo Watershed.

Kivu supports an impoverished fauna by comparison with other large Rift Valley lakes, as a result of an unusually high level of volcanic activity. The geological record suggests that the release of methane trapped below the lake’s surface has resulted in regular mass extinctions every few thousand years. As a result, fewer than 30 fish species are known from the lake and, while this does include 16 endemics, it pales by comparison with the many hundreds of species recorded from Lakes Victoria and Tanganyika.

High methane levels probably also explain the complete absence of hippo and croc, and are also cited by those who claim that the lake has no Bilharzia. Kivu’s attractively irregular shoreline, with its verdant slopes and sandy beaches, is served by three main resort towns. The most northerly of these, Rubavu/Gisenyi, has the best tourist facilities, partly because of its proximity to Rwanda Volcanoes National Park .

Karongi/Kibuye, further south and with the advantage of being far closer to Kigali, also has a few decent lakeshore hotels. At the southern end of the lake, overlooking the exit point of the Rusizi River, Rusizi/Cyangugu can easily be visited in conjunction with Nyungwe National Park and Huye/Butare, and has recently gained its first hotel meeting international standards.

1. Travel earlier than others. We always encourage our customers to avoid driving during these times and make sure they drive at least few minutes to these times. If you know that most people leave home for work at around 7:00 am, the start driving from your home atleast 20 minutes to 7:00am. Same applies to evening hours when people are leaving work. Start travelling atleast 20 minutes to 5:00pm when most people leave their offices to home .this will help you avoid traffic jam that is hectic.
2. Know other routes that can lead you to the same destination; – knowing the various roads in urban places which can lead you to the same destination is very important when avoiding traffic jam. In case you find that one road is hit with traffic jam then you can use the other that is better off. This will save you the burden of keeping in jam for hours. We always encourage our clients to especially foreigners to use the maps well and also travel with a guide to help them overcome jam by helping them locate alternative routes.
3. Lastly, keeping in the correct line on the road while driving helps to avoid traffic jam. Impatient drivers on the road always create other lines trying to move faster and in the end they create traffic jam. This is common in Africa where roads are not monitored well by the police. You can find that 3 lines have been created and it’s difficult to select which one to use but we encourage you to pick out the correct one. This is always in the middle in circumstances where 3 have been created. Correct lines move faster since the traffic officers care about them and less of the others.

Visit Rwanda For Gorillas Golden Monkey Tracking.

Golden monkey tracking in Rwanda is one of the exciting safari activity that shouldn’t be missed by any tourists as these primates do have a golden fur coats on top of their backs as it gives a good colour that is beautiful to watch and it can be only be done in volcanoes national park which is located in the northwest of Rwanda unlike in Uganda where it can be done in Bwindi impenetrable national park. There are two habituated golden monkeys that live in this national park where each group consist of around 70 and 100 members respectively members of which, most of them live in the Bamboo forests. Golden monkeys are endangered species and unique in nature located in the Virunga mountain ranges as it spans near the border of Rwanda, democratic republic of Congo and Uganda.

It is always a fun experience when tourists come and see these stubborn primates that do move up from tree to the next tree feeding in the bamboo forest leaves.  The craziest part of these primates is that they do move close the tourists in about few meters which is a good sight for seeing these golden monkeys by tourists as they give a good impression to the tourists to come again and watch colorful primates.

For one to see these colorful primates, a permit is needed as it costs around 100dollars to watch which is normally booked around 3 months back before one alives at the park. Rwanda tourism board is the body responsible for the issuing of golden monkey permits in Uganda. A group of eight people are needed to this activity as it may not take a long period of time watch. Furthermore, when one reaches at the park in the morning hours, he will be required to check on his permit whether the permit is available, and then after he will be taken though the all procedures and protocols needed to do this activity by an English speaking guide.

What is interesting about Golden monkeys trekking compared to mountain Gorillas tracking in Rwanda is in two things one being that in golden monkeys trekking where there is no limit of number of people needed to do this activity which is not in mountain Gorillas were they state a certain number of people needed to do this activity (8 people are needed in one group as it can encourage tourists to do both golden monkeys tracking and mountain Gorillas at the same time. The second part which is interesting is that it is normally done in low land areas as not too much fitness of the body is needed to do this activity unlike mountain Gorillas which is done in mountains as the name suggests.

To start trekking in volcanoes national park of these primates, one is needed every early in the morning  at the national park head quarters at 7:00am to get a gorilla permit just in case haven’t got your permit to do this activity. Their after, you will be transferred to Sabinyo volcanoes which takes about 10 to 15 minute drive before which you will be briefed what is needed to do this  safari activity. Tourists are given one hour to spend time with these primates as they take photographs moving together with them to their places they live.

Furthermore on these golden monkeys, they do have long tails at the back of their body which helps them do balance up in the branches of trees during their movements from tree to another which is not with the mountain Gorillas as the name suggests. When you look at what they do in their daily live is that, they do like and love digging sweet potatoes in the soil and do clean them when want to eat.

There are some requirements that are needed to do this activity that include having long trousers, long sleeved shirt, a hat light-rain-Jacket, poncho, water proof hiking boots which might be used at any time of the year when rain has occurred, plus also food like snacks which might be either be given to you by the park staff or brought by you from your home that are needed during the course of tracking  never know how long is the trip. A porter who can carry these items is needed just when you start your Golden monkey tracking in the park to carry and safe guide your items
